Greenery for High Impact and the Simplest Details

Jennifer Morris

When I started writing about the greenery explosion just two years ago, I discussed the amazing varieties of greens that could add unique color and texture to your designs and how the emphasis on greenery was changing the look that brides were able to achieve with their wedding decor. In the beginning, greenery helped brides to achieve a more rustic look at countryside venues throughout the U.S. Today, greenery is becoming a feature in all kinds of weddings including more stately or modern ballrooms in the city and in communities surrounding Washington D.C.

Whether your interested in creating a big impact design or adding small embellishments, greenery can complete your look, especially in combination with your favorite florals.

Hanging greens from the ceiling or a chandelier will definitely transform your ceremony or reception space. Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. boasts absolutely beautiful venues that have so much potential for these types of installations. This wedding season, the team at J. Morris Flowers will add greens to every inch of the barn rafters at venues like Riverside on the Potomac while draping greens from modern industrial fixtures in some of D.C.’s coolest venues. Your creative consultation is a great time to discuss the mood or feeling you’re hoping to create as a wedding couple. We’ll consider the permanent fixtures available at your venue as well as the potentail for temporary fixtures created on site.

Hanging installations raise the room

Couples are really getting creative in the way that they use greenery and flowers to create drama or express their personal style. We are designing installations that are full and lush, and others that are designed to be light, airy and even a little bit wispy.

The process for hanging greeneries and florals from a fixture has not changed so much, but the floral industry has gotten very creative about the shapes and styles for these designs. In the photo (left), taken at the Salamander Resort and Spa, florals and greens get moisture from hidden foam “sausages” while longer greens like Nandina and other vine varieties are hardy enough to last and create natural cascade and drape.

Carlos, a member of the J. Morris team uses a wood plank and ropes or cables to hang the installations. As you can see from the photos below, some of the greening in can be done earlier at the studio. This early preparation allows us to get our work done in a timely fashion without interfering with the other important preparations that need to be done by your vendors. Our team carefully lifts the piece into position and then begins the process of creating the final design on site. Myriam and Alyssa will be up and down the ladder, examining the effect of their work from every angle that a guest might have.

Simple greenery adornments add fullness to the room

If you are thinking about putting a lot of emphasis on hanging or raised arrangements,  then let’s pull the whole look together with flowers, candles and or simple greenery elements that can complete tables, dress a cake or draw attention to a seating chart or welcome sign. Greenery is simple, but it can also be very elegant. In fact, brides working with a budget are using a combinaton of full floral designs in beautiful vases on some portion of their tables with loose greenery and tall votives or cylinders on others.

We can create a light, trailing vine effect with leafy but hardy greens (vines are a little more perishable) for your long tables. Compared to regular garland, this looser style is airy while achieving a pretty three-dimensional look. Like fuller garland, we can nestle votive candles, bud vases or larger votive vases that incorporate your favorite flowers from the day. Long tables look romantic and very complete with these tasteful embellishments.

As you might imagine, more traditional greeery garland will give you a fuller look for your tables. Learn more about greenery garlands using the link below.
