Wedding Flowers 101: A Guide for Choosing the Best Flowers for Your Wedding

Choosing your flowers is one of the most exciting and creative parts of the wedding planning, but before you make any decision, there are a few points you will want to consider. Master Floral Designer and 13 year owner of J. Morris Flowers, Jennifer Morris, offers her advice and expertise to help you get started.

WHAT ARE TODAY’S TRENDS IN FLOWERS & DECOR?

"The round ball bridal bouquet is out! Today’s floral styles are looser, more fluid and are full of interesting blooms like Ranunculus and Dahlias, and greenery like Camelia Branches and Jasmine Vine. Bold mid-century color combos, soft romantic tones, and inky purples are the fashion. Accents of gold, silver and copper (even mixed together) make for very glamorous accents."

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING WEDDING FLOWERS?

"If you have your heart set on a particular flower, like the ever popular Peony, or black and white Anemone, you will want to make sure you choose spring. I strongly believe that because you get married in October it does not mean you have to have orange flowers. The wedding trumps the season! Even if you choose champagne and pink for fall you can always add harvest elements like seed pods or a few strands of millet. There are so many ways to combine colors, flowers and other design elements."

HOW MUCH OF MY WEDDING BUDGET SHOULD I EXPECT TO SET ASIDE FOR FLOWERS?

"Everyone seems to have parts of the wedding that are more important than others. For some it’s the band, for others it’s the food or flowers. If you are a flower lover and you want it to really show then I suggest setting aside 20% for your flower budget. If you want nice flowers and decor, but have other priorities then 10% will do the trick."

WHERE SHOULD I CONCENTRATE THE MAJORITY OF MY FLOWER BUDGET...PERSONALS, CEREMONY, RECEPTION, AND WHY?

"My philosophy: Concentrate your budget on your bouquet and the reception. Let’s face it, you’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time planning this wedding and your dress is to die for. You deserve the perfect bouquet! And what do people remember the most? A thoughtful ceremony - and a GORGEOUS party afterward. If you pack the flowers into the reception everyone will have more time to enjoy their beauty."

HOW MUCH GOES INTO THE PRICE OF EACH WEDDING?

"The price of a wedding is broken down into three main parts:

1. Cost of flowers & materials

2. Labor/Designing

3. Day-of work - set-up and delivery

There is so much more that goes into a wedding - consultations, proposal revisions, ordering flowers, writing recipes for each custom design, flower processing and prep, packaging and clean-up. At J. Morris Flowers each item on your wedding proposal will be priced to include the flowers & materials and labor for that item. Day-of services like delivery, set-up and tear-down are listed separately."

WHAT ARE THE 3 KEY ELEMENTS THAT I SHOULD LOOK FOR IN A FLORAL DESIGNER?

"One: Someone who will take the time to educate you about your flower choices and design options.

Two: A designer who takes the time to understand your style - because only then can we translate that look into the flowers you need (e.g. Rustic, Avant Garde, Hip etc.)

Three: A designer who shows passion for their work-and who makes the whole process fun and stress-free!"

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLORAL STYLE FOR MY WEDDING?

"There is no wrong style as long as you are choosing blooms you love in colors that will make you happy on your wedding day. There are many combinations that you could choose, but go with what your gut tells you. A good designer should be able to ask you the right questions to help guide you in your decisions and offer plenty of beautiful options."

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY INITIAL CONSULTATION?

"Do your homework! Wedding magazines and great social media platforms like Pinterest make choosing flowers and styles to show your floral designer quick and easy. I always want to see what a client picks on their own to understand their personal style, color choice, and what grabs them in feel and design. You’ll be amazed that the photos you choose will start to build a theme and a good designer will understand."

BONUS TIP: WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR FLOWERS AFTER YOUR BIG DAY!!

"Not sure how to preserve your bouquet? One simple solution is Silica Gel. You can buy a can of it at your local craft store and just follow the steps for drying your bouquet."
